SolidWorks Software Helps Monarch
Hydraulics Bring Raw Power To Heavy Equipment
CONCORD, Mass.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Aug. 22, 2005— Monarch
Hydraulics Inc., a world leader in mobile and industrial
hydraulic systems, is using 20 licenses of SolidWorks® 3D
mechanical design software to create a wide range of
hydraulic power units for customers around the world. These
products produce up to 20,000 pounds of force for auto
lifts, snowplows, lift buckets, dump trucks, wheelchair
lifts, exercise equipment, farm implements, robotics, and
other hydraulic applications.
SolidWorks and COSMOS®
design analysis software helps this Grand Rapids, Mich.,
company meet the complex challenges of bringing a wide
variety of power units to a competitive global market. Key
design challenges for Monarch Hydraulics include the power
units' manifolds, which are sophisticated aluminum blocks
with complex patterns of interconnected holes, contours, and
valves that regulate force.
"The Monarch engineering team has doubled its productivity
in the three years since it switched to SolidWorks, which is
critical for our global competitiveness," said Monarch
Designer Nathan Garrett. "Our analyses indicate we complete
twice as many engineering work requests today as five years
ago with the same staff. Since each application differs so
dramatically from the next, SolidWorks is essential for
helping us quickly create multiple designs from a finite
number of basic models. Using SolidWorks, we can
strategically place cavities and working holes so that they
interoperate with third-party components and fit seamlessly
into our customers' applications. COSMOSWorks®
design analysis software ensures key parts are strong yet
not over-designed, keeping units reliable, compact, and
long-lasting."
In addition to its hydraulic power products, Monarch also
uses SolidWorks to design sophisticated testing
environments, some incorporating more than 1,000 parts.
Monarch thoroughly tests every product leaving its factory.
"The beauty of hydraulics is that enormous forces can be
created from relatively compact machines, and Monarch
Hydraulics has mastered the technology over its 150 years,"
said Bertrand Sicot, vice president of North American sales
for SolidWorks Corporation. "Hydraulics systems engineers
need powerful yet easy-to-use design tools that enable them
to quickly match form to function, and validate their
designs as they work. SolidWorks and COSMOS are ideal for
these applications, as Monarch's results are proving."
